Chariots of Fire - Movie 1981 - Closing Scenes

Chariots of Fire - Movie 1981 - Closing Scenes - Eric Liddell ( Ian Charleson ) wins the 400 meter race in the 1924 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, France. Closing scene with British choir singing "Jerusalem" at the 1978 funeral of Harold Abrahams.Chariots of Fire http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C... of Fire is a British film released in 1981. Written by Colin Welland and directed by Hugh Hudson, it is based on the true story of British athletes preparing for and competing in the 1924 Summer Olympics. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won four, including Best Picture. The title is a quotation from the hymn Jerusalem which is a setting of a poem by William Blake. The film's working title was "Running" until Welland saw the scene with the singing of the hymn and decided to change the title.-MusicAlthough the film is a period piece, set in the 1920's, the Academy Award-winning original soundtrack composed by Vangelis uses a modern, 1980's electronic sound with a strong use of synthesizer and piano among other instruments. This was a bold and significant departure from earlier period films which employed sweeping orchestral instrumentals. The title theme of the film has become iconic and has been used in subsequent films and television shows during slow-motion.The film also incorporates a traditional work: a British choir singing "Jerusalem" at the 1978 funeral of Harold Abrahams, the event which bookends and presumably inspired the making of the film. Gilbert and Sullivan also features heavily.-Academy Awards (1981)Chariots of Fire was very successful at the Academy Awards. When he accepted his Oscar for Best Original Screenplay Colin Welland famously announced "The British are coming"Best Picture - David Puttnam, producer - won Original Music Score - Vangelis - won Writing Original Screenplay - Colin Welland - won Costume Design - Milena Canonero - won Best Supporting Actor - Ian Holm - nominated Directing - Hugh Hudson - nominated Film Editing - Terry Rawlings - nominated -Chariots of Fire (1981) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt00... @TheVentrue1 - 3 and a half laps? That's closer than 3 laps I suppose. I think you'll find it 3 and 3/4 laps- a VERY logical distance. Why not 4 laps= 1 mile approx.?

What sort of crazy track do i runon??? i do athletics for my country check my profile, and the 1500m is 3 and a half laps?

"its 3 laps and then the last strech of a run whilst 1500 is 3 laps"TheVentrue1-What sort of crazy track do you run on? 1500m is 3 laps? Last time I looked 3 laps were 1200m . 4 laps = 1600m (or roughly 1 mile). The problem is that modern athletics runs tournament races over metric distances around an Imperial measurement track!

@TheVentrue1 - The 4 minute mile(Roger Bannister).Pretty prestigious! Why do you think a circuit is 400m ? A strange number, isn't it? Possibly because it's pretty much 440yards-or 1/4 mile. The modern Olympics were instigated by Baron de Coubertin, who was influenced by the Much Wenlock Olympics and British Athletics in general. Perhaps 440 yards is a consequence of this? After all , why not a 500m circuit-makes more sense in metric!

how is it more prestigous, its 3 laps and then the last strech of a run whilst 1500 is 3 laps, ofcourse an American would say its hard, just add an extra 100m to an orginal run thats been around for decades, pretty cool.
tyronecee (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
right right, you swear like america isn't a country with millions of runners, many of which run the 1600. besides, the mile is considered much more prestigious than the 1500. look it up, then we'll laugh.
