Right at 0:50 when he demos the Notch for the first time, I'd say that sweeping it has a nice phasing/flanging kinda sound that would be great for long pads... maybe modded by an LFO that was increasing in frequency over time?

Well, I understand notches are useful for eliminating an unpleasant ringing from a recording, but it doesn't seem to have much practical use in synthesis.
