Why Am I So Tired? Understanding Midlife Energy Depletion

Tiredness is one of the most common complaints I hear from women in midlife. It’s a tiredness that feels different, deeper, more persistent, and harder to shake. Your motivation may have vanished, your brain feels foggy, and the spark you once had is just… gone.

So why are we so tired? And more importantly, what can we do to get our energy back?

Let’s take a deeper look.

Why Do Energy Levels Change at Midlife?

Midlife is a time of profound biological and emotional transition. It’s not just “getting older”, it’s a shift in how your body produces, stores, and uses energy. Here’s why:

  • Hormonal Fluctuations – Oestrogen, progesterone, thyroid, cortisol, insulin, and melatonin all impact your sleep, metabolism, stress response, and energy production. As these hormones fluctuate or decline, it can leave you feeling flat, foggy, or fatigued.

  • Cellular Changes – As we age, the cellular engine—your mitochondria, can slow down. So can other organelles like the endoplasmic reticulum and peroxisomes. Cellular membranes may become less efficient at transporting nutrients and waste, impacting your energy at the most fundamental level.

  • The Electrome Disruption – Your body’s electrical system, known as the electrome, regulates everything from nerve signalling to nutrient uptake. Mineral imbalances, chronic stress, toxin exposure, poor hydration or increasing exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) can disrupt this charge, reducing your ability to generate and sustain energy.

  • Lifestyle Accumulation – Years of poor sleep, high stress, inadequate nutrition, sedentary habits, and environmental exposures compound over time. What you “got away with” in your 20s and 30s begins to show up in your 40s and 50s as persistent fatigue.

  • Psychosocial Shifts – Midlife often brings major life changes, career plateaus, relationship shifts, parenting transitions, aging parents, or identity changes. Emotional stress can be just as draining as physical dysfunction.

The good news? These changes are not irreversible. With the right insights, testing, and support, you can reclaim your energy, naturally and intelligently.

What’s Really Draining Your Energy?

There are many reasons why energy levels decline during the menopausal transition. Some are obvious, while others are hidden beneath the surface.

Here are some of the most common causes:

  • Cellular dysfunction – Your energy begins at the cellular level. When the structure and function of your cells break down, whether it’s compromised membranes, sluggish mitochondria, or underperforming organelles—your entire system feels the effects.

  • The Electrome – Every cell in your body maintains a delicate electrical gradient across its membrane, known as the electrome. This gradient powers the exchange of nutrients and waste, drives communication between cells, and fuels vital functions like muscle contraction and nerve signalling. When the electrome is disrupted, energy production can decline dramatically.

  • Mineral deficiencies – Magnesium, zinc, iron, iodine, and other trace minerals play a vital role in energy production and hormonal balance.

  • Heavy metal toxicity – Accumulated toxins such as mercury, lead, and aluminium interfere with cell function and increase oxidative stress.

  • Hormonal shifts – Fluctuations in oestrogen, progesterone, cortisol, thyroid hormones, and insulin all affect how energised (or depleted) you feel.

  • Poor sleep quality – Even if you're in bed for 8 hours, you may not be getting restorative deep or REM sleep.

  • Blood sugar instability – Energy crashes after meals, or between meals, may reflect poor glycaemic control.

  • Chronic stress – Ongoing stress overloads your adrenal glands and depletes your nervous system’s resilience.

  • Inflammation and immune dysregulation – These drain energy reserves and contribute to fatigue, even if you don’t feel “sick.”

In short: fatigue is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It's your body’s way of saying something isn’t working properly, especially at the cellular level.

Can You Test for Low Energy?

There’s no single test that measures energy levels, because fatigue is a symptom, not a root cause. Many different systems contribute to how energised (or exhausted) you feel.

That’s why my first step is always assessing mineral status. Minerals are the essential building blocks for energy production, and they support everything from detoxification and hormonal balance to blood sugar stability, sleep quality, stress resilience, and immune regulation.

A deficiency or imbalance here can be the reason beneath the reason for your fatigue.

Tools to Help Reset Your Energy

1. OligoScan Mineral & Toxin Analysis
This fast, non-invasive scan uses spectrophotometry to measure intracellular levels of key minerals and heavy metals. It helps identify:

  • Deficiencies in energy-boosting minerals like magnesium, zinc, iodine, and selenium

  • Toxic accumulations of metals like mercury, aluminium, or lead

  • Nutrient imbalances that affect adrenal and thyroid function

With this data, we can create a targeted plan to restore balance and vitality.

2. Hugo™ PEMF Therapy
PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) therapy gently stimulates cellular energy production by sending electromagnetic pulses into the body. These pulses:

  • Support mitochondrial function

  • Boost circulation and oxygenation

  • Reduce pain and inflammation

  • Help recharge your electrome

Many women find it deeply calming, energising, and restorative, especially when paired with nutrient support.

3. The BioCharger™ Experience
The BioCharger combines four types of subtle energy (light, voltage, frequency, and magnetics) to recharge your cells. Many women report:

  • More mental clarity

  • A lift in physical energy

  • Improved mood and emotional resilience

  • Better sleep that night

Think of it as plugging your body back into its power source.

Final Thoughts

If you’re feeling constantly tired, foggy, and flat, it’s time to listen to your body. Midlife fatigue isn’t something you just have to put up with. With the right testing, insights, and support, you can reclaim your energy, mental sharpness, and vitality again.
