When Should I See a Naturopath for Menopause Symptoms?

naturopathic medicine Mar 23, 2026

Many women assume that menopause symptoms are something they simply have to put up with.

Hot flushes, poor sleep, anxiety, weight gain, fatigue, brain fog and loss of confidence are often described as a normal part of getting older.

While hormonal change is natural, feeling unwell all the time is not.

In my clinic, I often see women who have been struggling for months, sometimes years, before they realise that there are natural ways to support the body through the menopausal transition. In many cases, the earlier we address the underlying imbalances, the easier it is to restore energy, sleep, mood and overall wellbeing.

So how do you know when it might be time to see a naturopath?

When your symptoms feel worse than expected

Some women move through menopause with only mild symptoms, while others feel as though their body has suddenly stopped working the way it used to.

You may notice that your energy drops, your sleep becomes lighter, your mood changes, or your weight starts to increase even though you haven’t changed your diet or lifestyle.

This often happens because menopause does not just affect hormones.
It can expose underlying issues that were already there, such as nutrient deficiencies, thyroid imbalance, chronic stress, gut problems, inflammation, or poor metabolic health.

Menopause places extra demands on the body, and if your systems are already under strain, symptoms can feel much more intense.

A naturopathic approach looks at the whole picture, not just hormone levels.

When you feel like your body has changed and you don’t know why

One of the most common things women tell me is:

“I don’t feel like myself anymore.”

They may have always been energetic, positive, motivated and mentally sharp, and suddenly they feel flat, tired, anxious, forgetful or overwhelmed.

Sometimes basic blood tests come back normal, yet you still feel far from well.

This is where a broader view of health can be helpful.
In midlife, symptoms are often influenced by factors such as blood sugar balance, thyroid function, nervous system stress, gut health, liver detoxification, and even environmental exposures.

Hormones are only one part of the picture.

When you want to understand the root cause, not just treat symptoms

Many conventional treatments focus on reducing symptoms, which can be helpful, but they don’t always explain why those symptoms developed in the first place.

Naturopathic care aims to understand what has changed in the body and what it needs in order to function properly again.

For example, fatigue in menopause may be related to:

  • poor sleep
  • stress hormone imbalance
  • thyroid function
  • nutrient deficiencies
  • mitochondrial function
  • blood sugar instability
  • inflammation
  • gut health
  • toxin exposure

When the underlying drivers are addressed, symptoms often improve more naturally and more sustainably.

When lifestyle, and environment need attention

At midlife, the body becomes less tolerant of the things it could cope with when you were younger.

Environmental toxins, poor diet, chronic stress, lack of sleep, alcohol, processed foods and nutrient depletion can all start to have a bigger impact during perimenopause and menopause.

This is because the body’s repair systems are not as resilient as they once were.

When symptoms keep changing or new ones keep appearing

Perimenopause can be unpredictable.
You may feel fine for a few months, then suddenly develop sleep problems, anxiety, heavy periods, or joint pain.

This happens because hormone levels fluctuate before they decline, and those fluctuations can affect the brain, metabolism, nervous system and immune system.

Without the right support, symptoms can seem random and confusing.

Working with a practitioner who understands these patterns can make the transition much easier to navigate.

When you are unsure what supplements to take

There is a huge amount of information online about menopause, and it can be difficult to know what actually applies to you.

Two women may both have hot flushes, but the cause may be completely different.

One may need liver support, another may need adrenal support, another may need better blood sugar control, and another may need nervous system support.

This is why personalised treatment plans tend to work better than guessing.

When functional testing may be helpful

Not every woman needs testing, but in some cases it can give useful information about what is happening inside the body.

Depending on symptoms, testing may look at hormone balance, thyroid function, metabolic health, nutrient status, gut health, inflammation, or detoxification pathways.

In my clinic, testing is used to guide treatment when needed, but it is always combined with a detailed health history and symptom picture.

Numbers alone do not tell the whole story.

When menopause symptoms are affecting your quality of life

You don’t need to wait until symptoms become severe before getting support.

Many women come for help when they notice that their energy is lower than it used to be, their sleep is not as good, their mood is more fragile, or their body feels different in ways they can’t explain.

These changes are common, but they are not something you have to just accept.

With the right support, many women feel stronger, clearer and more balanced in midlife than they did in their forties.

My approach to menopause support

As a naturopath specialising in menopause, my focus is on understanding why symptoms are happening, not just which symptom needs to be treated.

Treatment plans may include nutrition, herbal medicine, targeted supplements, lifestyle changes, stress support, sleep support, and when needed, functional testing to guide a more personalised approach.

The goal is to support the body at the level of hormones, metabolism, nervous system and cellular health so that symptoms improve naturally.

Every woman is different, and treatment should reflect that.

When to book a consultation

You may benefit from seeing a naturopath if you feel that your body has changed, your symptoms are affecting your daily life, or you simply want to understand what is happening and what you can do about it.

Menopause is a normal transition, but it should not mean losing your energy, confidence or sense of wellbeing.

Support is available, and you don’t have to work it out on your own.

If you would like personalised guidance, you can book a menopause strategy call to discuss your symptoms and whether naturopathic care may be right for you.
